Introduction

Study support is a range of learning activities outside normal lessons and its purpose is to improve young people's motivation and help them become more effective learners. Above all it aims to raise achievement.

Study support is firmly aligned with the five outcomes for children and young

people specified in Every Child Matters:

  • Be Healthy
  • Stay Safe
  • Enjoy & Achieve
  • Make a Positive Contribution
  • Achieve Economic Well-Being

Study support activities contribute to the successful achievement of these five

outcomes, by improving children's and young people's social skills, emotional

well-being, attitudes to learning, attendance at school and overall attainment.

Study support programmes provide opportunities for parents/carers and young people to influence the provision with more choice, to maximise the life chances of children, young people and adults.

The Trafford study support quality standard will provide a flexible framework for self-evaluation and development of study support activities across schools and other settings. The standard shares many of the guiding principles set out in the ?The Study Support Code of Practice ? A Guide for schools DfES-1063-2004.
